On Thursday, March 27, 2014, students and other groups rallied in downtown Manhattan in front of NYS Comptroller DiNapoli’s office building to urge him to divest all funds from fossil fuel corporations and reinvest those funds in alternative and renewable businesses. NYS Comptroller DiNapoli has made powerful statements warning about the risks of investing in fossil fuels and said, “Institutional investors must think over the long-term, which means that we must take environmental risks into consideration when we make investments.” Let’s help him make the right decision for New York. At $160 billion, the New York State Common Retirement Fund would be the largest institutional investor to commit to fossil fuel divestment — which would be a huge victory for the climate justice movement.
