Excerpts From The  NYS Public Service Commission Hearings On The CPV Power Plant
On February 25, 2014, the New York State Public Service Commission held hearings in Middletown, NY, to get public comments on the proposed construction of a fracked-gas power plant in Orange County by Competitive Power Ventures (CPV). This 30 minute video shows much of the comments and testimony given from across the range of residents living and working in the affected NYS area: Minisink, Waywayanda and the county itself. Speakers come from: union council leadership positions, elected offices, the school board, environmental groups and individuals from many walks of life: teachers, union and non-union workers, neighbors and other local residents.
Tough issues are raised in this (apparently) mainstream-media-free confrontation between an embattled environmentally threatened Orange County NY agricultural community and more numerous union workers rallying for construction jobs to build yet another element of environmentally threatening fossil fuel infrastructure. In this case the fight is over a proposed #fracked -gas-fired power plant for Orange County. +Asha Canalos (of +Minisink Matters, FoodNotFracking.org etc.) gives very moving and alarming testimony based on her direct experience with the residentially situated, noisy, air polluting Minisink Compressor Station. She, Pramela Malick and several other environmentally concerned speakers detail numerous outrages in the steamrolling path towards rubber stamp approval and call for the commission to reject the proposed plant and to extend the comment period beforehand. Union and trade group speakers give forceful testimony in favor of the plant. Especially forceful is Dennis Sullivan (Carpenters Local 279), speaking on how well engineered he expects the plant to be, how good a neighbor it will be. But his well articulated points in favor of creating “600 jobs for us” get overshadowed by a bullying challenge to an anti-plant commenter: “You want to have a discussion with me, Buddy? We could do that.”
